Chocolate: food of the gods; coinage for the Aztecs; beverage of French kings and fine ladies; obsession of the European elite; emergency energy ration for American GI’s; affordable, machine-made snack for the masses; the newest trend in health food; and motivation for child labor abuses in West Africa today. We will travel through twenty-two centuries of chocolate history to trace the evolution of this most decadent of foodstuffs. Along the way, we’ll meet some famous chocolate lovers, look at how chocolate manufacturers manipulate our taste buds so we “love” their chocolate, see what crimes were and are committed for the love of chocolate, and find out why you might want to think twice before offering your sweetheart a heart-shaped box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day.

About our speaker
Dr. Cindy Yetter-Vassot has a B.S. in music education from West Chester University, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in French from the University of Virginia. She is Associate Professor and Chair of the French Department at Franklin & Marshall College, where she has been teaching French language, literature and civilization courses since 1989. She has published articles on 18th century French theatre, and language teaching pedagogy. She is also a self-proclaimed chocoholic, with no plans of entering rehab! In 2003, in an attempt to learn more about her chocolate obsession, she created a general education Foundations course, taught in English, called “the Culture of Chocolate”. This course has become one of the most popular Foundations courses at F&M, often with a waitlist of over 100 students.

Parking is available in the adjacent Penn Square garage (formerly the King St. garage). DO NOT park in spots dedicated to hotel room guests. Parking is $2 for the 1st hour and $1 per hour after that (approximately $4 for our event). Handicapped spaces are available adjacent to the 2nd floor hotel entrance. There is also a hotel drop-off area in front of the building, just off Penn Square (the original Watt & Shand entrance).
Our meeting will be held in the new Marriott at the Lancaster County Convention Center, the site of the former Watt & Shand department store on historic Penn Square. Arrive early and check out the new convention center and the hotel amenities (the view of Lancaster City from the 19th floor, the façade of the Thaddeus Stevens home, the restored Watt and Shand exterior, the building preserved within the lobby, etc.)! www.lancasterconventioncenter.com

At our last meeting
Our January meeting was a Plant tour of two facilities near Lancaster
Cochrane Foundry, Inc.
Cochrane Foundry, Inc. was founded in 1923 and has been in continuous operation since that time. Cochrane is a traditional sand casting foundry producing aluminum, brass an
d bronze castings ranging in size from a few ounces up to several hundred pounds. We are a job shop facility specializing in producing difficult castings that others in the industry are unable to generate. Because we do not utilize automated molding or pouring equipment we are able to produce smaller quantities at competitive prices with shorter lead times. Cochrane uses both traditional green-sand molding as well as a chemically bonded no-bake sand system for larger and more complex castings.
Spectrum Systems, LLC
Spectrum Systems, LLC was founded in 2003 and produces rotary dental diamond grinding instruments. Spectrum Systems instruments feature diamonds that are bonded to a stainless steel substrate via a brazing process as opposed to the more common industry practice of utilizing electroplating for bonding. Diamond and braze particles are applied to stainless steel blanks (mandrels) robotically. The assembled instruments are then fired in a hydrogen atmosphere to melt the braze particles which will wet and flow bonding the diamonds to the stainless steel substrate. Rotary tools produced in this fashion have proven to be not only more durable but also more efficient in cutting tooth structure.
