Biodiesel Research at Messiah College

Biodiesel Research at Messiah College

During the past several years there has been a great deal of discussion about alternatives to traditional petroleum based motor and heating fuels. Biodiesel, an agriculturally based, clean burning, biodegradable and renewable fuel is one alternative that has received a lot of attention. Mr. Michael Zummo will give an overview of the work that Messiah College students are doing to improves the processes and technology associated with small-scale biodiesel production and how this work makes a difference both locally and abroad.

The purpose of the Messiah College Biodiesel Research Project is to develop small scale biodiesel process and processor technology capable of meeting industry standards for biodiesel fuel. This includes developing and operating a small scale testing lab, exploring alternative feedstock available to local producers and establishing the viability of small biodiesel production for local entrepreneurs and institutions. Funding for this research was made possible by a three year research grant from the United States Department of Energy.
